How To Choose The Perfect Wedding Band
Share
Got FOMO when it comes to picking the perfect diamond shape? Or maybe you just can’t decide which one speaks to you? Don’t worry—I’ve got you covered! Today, I’m breaking down all the different shapes of wedding bands so you can see what works best for your style. We’ve got oval, emerald, radiant, and more. And for a little bonus? I’m also showing you round diamond bands that pair beautifully with each shape—just in case you’re not into the matchy-matchy look.
Welcome back! This is Bonnie with By Bonnie Jewelry, where I talk about all things diamonds and craftsmanship. Let’s not wait any longer—I’m diving in right now!
Cushion, Emerald, and Marquise pairings
Alright, first up—I’ve got three gorgeous sets to show you!
We have:
-
Cushion on cushion – A cushion-shaped center stone paired with a cushion-cut diamond band.
-
Emerald on emerald – That forever, never-ending Hall of Mirrors effect—so sleek, so timeless.
-
Marquise on marquise – An elongated, ultra-elegant look.
Now, let’s talk about the details! Cushion on cushion? I get it. I went with this pairing when I first got engaged, and I still love it. It’s soft, romantic, and has that beautiful, pillowy brilliance.
Emerald on emerald? Oh, honey, this is peak elegance. I recently created this set, and let me tell you—it is the definition of sophisticated. You just can’t go wrong with it.
Now, for marquise on marquise. Here’s the thing—a lot of people who choose marquise don’t always want a fully marquise-marquise matchy-matchy look. And I get it! I’ve actually paired a marquise center stone with an oval band before, and it looked stunning—a perfect way to soften the points while keeping that elongated elegance.
But if you love the full marquise look, this is what it looks like in all its glory! And remember, you can always pair any of these shapes with a solitaire band for a sleek, understated contrast. If you’re not into too much bling, that’s a great way to keep it balanced. Which style speaks to you?
Oval, Round, and Radiant pairings
Alright, let’s dive into the second set—because these combos are just as dreamy!
-
Round on round – Classic, timeless, and oh-so-versatile.
-
Radiant on radiant – A bold, brilliant look with that signature crushed-ice sparkle.
-
Oval on oval – Soft, elongated, and incredibly elegant.
Now, if you’re planning a fancy-shaped wedding band, it’s really important to understand the terminology. 100 points = 1 carat. So here, we have 20-point ovals, which are a really nice size if your center stone is 2 carats or larger.
And let’s talk practicality! If you work in a hospital or just don’t wear your big engagement ring every day, a well-chosen wedding band can stand alone beautifully. I also have a petite version, which is super popular because the crescent shape sits flush against your finger—no bulk, no awkward spacing. And when you pair it with a 2.5-carat oval center stone? Absolutely stunning.
Now, onto rounds. The beauty of a round diamond is how versatile it is. But here’s something to consider: How often will you wear your wedding band alone?
-
If you plan to wear your set together all the time, you might want a thinner band for balance.
-
If you’re wearing the band alone often, a little extra width can add presence.
Here’s an example: A 2.4mm band gives a completely different look compared to a 2.2mm solitaire band. Tiny difference, big impact!
Now, let’s talk about radiants—one of my personal favorites!
Here, we have a 3-carat radiant with 15-point diamonds—just that perfect size of bold but not over-the-top. The key with radiants? Shape matters. Some are more square, some more elongated. I love a slightly elongated cut because it really enhances the shape and sparkle.
And here’s a fun twist—radiants and rounds actually pair beautifully together! I have so many clients who mix and match—a radiant center stone with a round diamond band or vice versa.
So if you’re struggling to pick just one shape, here’s my tip: Go with a round diamond as your center stone and mix it up with a fancy-shaped band! For example, I have a round center stone paired with petite ovals—and the result? So soft, so elegant, so unique. Which pairing is your favorite?
Bonus Clip!
Bonus time! Let’s talk about gallery wedding bands—because if you love a bold, sculpted band, you’re going to want to see this.
Here’s what I have for you today:
-
3.2mm gallery band – Sleek and elegant
-
2.4mm band – A delicate, timeless option
-
Sophia 3.5mm band – A little bolder, a little extra—just how we like it
Now, let’s pair them with different engagement ring shapes!
Set #1:
-
Marquise paired with the 3.5mm band – A striking contrast of pointy and bold.
-
Radiant paired with the 3.2mm band – That extra sparkle meets clean lines.
-
Emerald paired with the 2.4mm band – Chic, sleek, and endlessly elegant.
Now, here’s a quick tip when pairing an emerald-cut diamond with a straight wedding band:
Emeralds have a longer profile, and if your engagement ring is in a lower setting, a straight band will create a noticeable gap between the two. Some people love that negative space, while others prefer a flush fit—so always consider your setting when choosing a wedding band! Which pairing is your favorite?
Contour Bands! Gap or no gap?
Some people love the gap, some people don’t—it’s all about personal preference!
If you’re in the “flush fit” club, let me introduce you to something special: our custom contour bands. At By Bonnie, we design these bands with a precise, custom curve that allows them to sit perfectly with your engagement ring—no awkward gaps, just seamless beauty.
Here’s a little trick we use: If you choose a contour eternity band, you can actually flip it around and wear it as a straight band when you want a different look. That way, you get the best of both worlds—flush when you want it, classic when you don’t.
It’s all about flexibility and making your ring work for you.
Round Wedding Bands!
Now, let’s move on to the second set of bonus clips—because who doesn’t love more options?
First up, we have a 2.5-carat oval paired with a 3.5mm round band. This has been such a classic, go-to look for my clients. If you love an oval but don’t want to go all-in on the matchy-matchy oval-on-oval, this is a great way to mix it up! The beauty of this pairing? You can wear the band alone or stacked, and it’s just as stunning either way.
Next, we have a cushion cut paired with a thin marquise band. Now, this is an unexpected combo, but trust me—it works. I’ve had clients pair a cushion with a dainty marquise band, and they love the contrast. It gives the ring stack a unique, artistic feel while still being super elegant.
And last, but absolutely not least, we have a 2-carat round solitaire (2.2mm band) paired with a 3.2mm U-gallery band. This one is just chef’s kiss—timeless, classic, and always in style. If you're looking for that effortlessly elegant look that you’ll love forever, this is it.
