The Best Setting For a 5ct Round Cut Diamond Ring

Are we all getting a little too obsessed with fancy shapes lately? Don’t get me wrong—I love a good radiant or emerald cut, but let’s not forget the most classic shape of all: the round diamond. Yes, today is all about that timeless 5-carat round diamond. Welcome back to another By Bonnie blog, where we talk about all things diamonds!

I’ll be breaking down all the details of this stunning ring, plus giving you a deep dive into three different basket styles you can choose for a round diamond. (Of course, there are plenty more, but these three are absolute must-knows.)

And because you know I love a good bonus, I’ll also be pairing this beauty with some of my favorite wedding bands. Ready? Let’s get into it!

The Eloise Setting

Here it is—a stunning 5-carat classic round diamond ring. Timeless, elegant, and always a favorite. A lot of my clients love the solitaire look, and trust me, I get it. We’ve done plenty of 3, 4, and 5-carat solitaire rings, where the diamond is the absolute star.

But lately? I’ve been obsessed with adding extra diamonds on the band. Just that little touch of sparkle makes all the difference! This beauty is from our Eloise Collection, featuring 3mm diamonds on the sides for that perfect balance of classic and glam.

For my own ring, I went with 3.5mm—because there’s no strict formula for pairing band diamonds with a center stone. It’s all about what feels right. And to keep it looking extra clean and timeless, we went with our classic six-prong setting. Simple, refined, and made to let that 5-carat brilliance shine.

Basket Styles: Tulip

We’ve also created this beauty in our Tulip Collection, featuring a 2.5-carat diamond with a six-prong tulip setting—and let me tell you, it turned out absolutely stunning.

If you love those delicate, intricate details that make your ring feel more unique and feminine, the six-prong tulip is a dream. It adds just the right touch of elegance and character, making your diamond feel even more special.

Basket Styles: Hidden Halo

Now, take a look at this six-prong hidden halo—we set a gorgeous 3.5-carat diamond in the center, and let me tell you, it is sparkle heaven. If you’re the kind of girl who lives for extra bling, this setting is made for you. The hidden halo gives you that extra touch of brilliance from every angle, so no matter how you move your hand, your diamond is dazzling.

Now, let’s compare all three styles:

  • The Tulip Six-Prong – Soft, feminine, full of character.
  • The Six-Prong Hidden Halo – For those who want sparkle from every angle.
  • The Classic Six-Prong – Timeless, clean, and effortlessly elegant.

And for those asking, Bonnie, does the hidden halo block the sparkle of the center diamond? Absolutely not! It actually enhances the overall brilliance without taking away from your main stone. So if you love that extra twinkle, this is definitely a setting to consider!

East-West Emerald Cut Wedding Band

Earlier, I mentioned I’d show you some wedding bands, and here we are! First up—my absolute favorite—the East-West Emerald Cut Band. I love the contrast of different fancy shapes. In a recent video, I asked if you guys prefer a matchy-matchy look or a contrasting look. Personally, I’m all about the contrast! I think mixing shapes adds so much character and makes the entire ring stack more interesting.

Now, if you’re going for larger diamonds on the band, here’s something to keep in mind—how your diamonds are actually set into the ring. Some styles, like this one, have a more exposed setting.

See how the girdle of the round diamonds sits slightly open on the sides? So, what’s the girdle? It’s that thin edge around the diamond, and in certain settings, it can be at risk of rubbing against another diamond’s girdle.

That’s exactly why, when I design this style, I prefer to mix in a different fancy shape. It helps prevent rubbing and adds that gorgeous contrast that makes your ring stand out!

North-South Emerald Cut Wedding Band

Now, let’s talk about pairing number two—the North-South orientation! This is the classic way to set an emerald cut band, and let me tell you, it’s a timeless look.

What I love about this style is that it’s a full five carats with these bold, chunky diamonds. Each stone is about 25 points—so, quick refresher: 100 points equals one carat. That means we’re working with a beautifully balanced band that gives you serious sparkle without overpowering your engagement ring.

Now, here’s something interesting—I’ve been thinking about reversing this concept with round diamonds. What do I mean by that? Stay with me—I’ll break it all down.

Reverse Size of Round Wedding Band

So, if you’ve been following along in my other blogs, you know I usually recommend the wedding band to be wider than the engagement ring. You’ve probably seen me pair 4mm or even 5mm bands with different engagement rings.

But in this case? We’re flipping the script.

Here, we have a 3mm engagement ring, and I’m actually downsizing the wedding band to 2mm. And honestly? I love it. The reverse contrast gives such a refined, delicate look.

Now, of course, you could add another band on the other side for a stacked look, but I love how this setup allows the engagement ring’s diamonds to shine. The band enhances the ring without competing with it, and you can absolutely wear it alone for a sleek, everyday look.

Wedding Bands by Themselves

Earlier, I showed you how this ring looks as part of a set, but now let’s take a moment to appreciate the 2.2mm band all on its own.

Now, let’s add in some other bands for comparison—here’s the Emerald Cut Band and the EastWest Band. Both are 25 points per diamond, but look at how the orientation changes everything.

The North-South setting gives a completely different feel compared to the EastWest setting, where the diamonds sit horizontally. Turning the stones impacts the overall width, and it’s so important to consider how that will change the look and feel of your set.

We Love Round!

Let’s not forget about my lovely, classic round! Because I do, I do, I do love a round diamond. Do you love round? Are you drawn to this style?

And here’s a little secret—I’m working on a yellow gold version right now! Would you want to see it? Let me know! Also, someone has been asking for a smaller version of my ring, and guess what? It’s happening! I’ll be debuting it soon. Don’t forget to follow me on Instagram @ByBonnieJewelry, and I’ll see you in the next blog.
