She Rejected A Big Box Ring, So I Made Her A New One
Share
She started just like so many of us do — with a trip to the mall. When you’re first looking for an engagement ring, you want to see what’s out there, and that’s completely normal. But here’s the catch: you don’t want to end up buying something you don’t love.
And that’s exactly where her journey began — from the generic cases at the mall to this absolute showstopper of a custom design.
Why She Wanted Something Different
When she walked in with her boyfriend, she quickly realized that the “case rings” weren’t for her.

Everything looked a little too generic. She wanted something with design, something elegant and delicate that truly represented her. She’s drop-dead gorgeous, so I told her, “Your ring has to be flawless — it has to match your beauty.”
She also had questions about natural versus lab grown diamonds, but felt like she wasn’t really getting the full education elsewhere. That’s when she came to me and said: “Bonnie, I love rose gold. Rose gold is everything. I just want something unique that speaks to me.”
The Design: A Seamless Halo with a Twist
The inspo photo was just the beginning. What she kept asking for was something “flawless and seamless.” She didn’t have the exact jewelry lingo, but I knew what she meant — minimal metal, delicate details, but still sturdy enough for everyday wear.
So, I designed her a seamless halo. Instead of four big prongs holding the stone, we created micro-prongs hidden in the halo itself. The result? A center diamond that looks like it’s floating, surrounded by sparkle with no distraction.
Her boyfriend was worried a halo might look too big, especially since a halo can add nearly a carat of finger coverage. A three-carat plus halo might’ve been overwhelming, especially since they’re expecting a little one soon. So we scaled it perfectly to her lifestyle.
And because she loves details, I added a surprise second halo — this time, tucked into the side profile. It’s the kind of secret sparkle that makes your heart skip a beat.
The Band: Marquise + Round Perfection
She fell in love with our marquise-and-round diamond band.
We’ve paired this model with different center stones — ovals, pears, radiants — and it always creates this beautiful balance of brilliance and shape. For her, it was the perfect finishing touch.
Wedding Band Pairings
And what’s a By Bonnie blog without wedding band pairings? Here are the three we tried:
1. Thin Pave Band – The delicate option. Classic and seamless, it keeps all eyes on the center stone.
2. Emerald Cut Band – Chunkier, with step-cut sparkle. I love the contrast of step cuts next to brilliant faceting.
3. The Sophia Band – A thicker round band, super low profile, and a client favorite. It sits beautifully without creating gaps or bulk.
Designing custom means you already know your bands will sit flush — no surprises down the line.
More Than Just a Ring
Custom design isn’t just about diamonds. It’s about being heard. When women tell us what they want, we mean business. We don’t want “generic.” We want unique. We want pieces that fit our lifestyle and tell our story.
And that’s what I love most about this process. It’s not just about creating a ring. It’s about creating happiness, beauty, and something that will be cherished forever.
So, if you’re searching for that perfect engagement ring and you haven’t found it yet, send me a message. I’d love to help you design your dream piece!
