What Happens When You Mix a 4ct Cushion Cut with Oval Diamonds?
Share
Okay wow—at the beginning of this year I swore radiant cuts were going to dominate 2025. But here we are, halfway in, and the real star of the show? Cushion cut diamonds. I’ve been making so many cushion cut engagement rings lately, I had to dedicate a whole blog to them.
If you’re stuck between cushion and radiant (or just love comparing diamonds as much as I do), this is so your blog. Welcome! I’m Bonnie, the hands behind By Bonnie Jewelry, where I talk about all things diamonds and craftsmanship—and I’m here to break it all down.
Let’s Start With a Line-Up
Cushion cut, brilliant cut, crushed ice, different carats, different metals—just a whole spread of sparkle. I recently did a 3.8 carat cushion cut solitaire set in gold, paired with an oval diamond band.
And let me tell you—this combo? Dreamy. I usually show cushion on round, cushion on cushion… but cushion on oval? Oh my goodness. The warmth. The color. The fire. Everything.
So... What’s the Real Difference Between Cushion and Radiant?
Let’s simplify:
- Cushion cut = soft corners, more pillowy look
- Radiant cut = sharp edges, angular lines, rectangular feel
Both have that elongated elegance, but they sparkle very differently. Also, cushion cuts come in more variations—like crushed ice vs. brilliant, square vs. elongated—which is why I always ask new clients: “Do you want more sparkle or more shape?”.
One of My Faves: A Six Carat Stunner
Let’s talk about that 6 carat cushion cut set I made recently—total showstopper. Inspired by Hailey Bieber’s vibe but with a personal twist: we added a tapered cathedral and stacked it with a petite emerald band plus a classic plain band for extra options.
The result? Sophisticated, feminine, but with that extra oomph. Honestly, I’m so obsessed. It’s that perfect blend of softness and drama.
Why Cushion Is My Forever Favorite
Confession time: my original engagement ring was a cushion cut—and I still love it. It’s that perfect in-between shape if you want something softer than a princess cut but more rounded than a radiant. And now with lab-grown diamonds, you get even more shape and size options without compromising budget or beauty.
We’ve made cushion cuts that look like:
- Soft squares (think vintage romance)
- Elongated pillows (major finger coverage)
- Cushion versions of round brilliants (trust me—it works!)
Sneak Peek: Cushion Meets Emerald
I’m so close to finishing a cushion cut paired with an emerald band and it is glorious. Elegant. Bold. Just the right touch of “wow.” I’ll be posting it here soon, so stay tuned!
Still Unsure About Metal? Here’s a Quick Tip
Not sure whether to go with yellow gold, platinum, or rose gold?
My tip: look at your skin tone and your wardrobe. What do you wear the most? What makes you feel radiant? That’s your metal.
Cushion Cut Wedding Bands? Yes, Please.
If you haven’t seen my Victoria setting cushion cut bands—you need to. They’re unique, timeless, and pair beautifully with round, oval, or even emerald.
If you’re all about mixing shapes (like me), this is a fun way to layer without clashing.
