radiant cut

Hi everyone, and welcome to another By Bonnie blog, where we chat about all things diamonds! Yes, I’m here to fulfill your diamond desires! So many of you have commented, "Bonnie, you're not talking enough about radiant cut diamonds!" Well, today, your wish is my command. In this blog, I’m diving into the radiant cut world with three essential topics:

1. How to differentiate between two types of radiant cut diamonds,

2. What to avoid when buying a radiant cut diamond, and

3. Fan favorite—different settings that pair perfectly with radiant cut diamonds.

And as a bonus? Oh yes, we’re also talking about the ultimate wedding band pairing! After all, what’s an engagement ring without a stunning band to match? So, be sure to read this blog all the way through for all the sparkly details.

Different Types Of Radiant Cut Diamonds

Let’s dive right in, shall we?

Number one: What are the different cuts of radiant diamonds? Yes, you heard me right! If you missed my Youtube video on cushion cut diamonds, where I broke down all the different cushion shapes, go check it out—you don’t want to miss those details! But today, we’re talking about radiant cuts, and here’s the surprise: there are two types of radiant cuts, maybe even more depending on the shape—square and elongated.

Now, let’s break it down: What is a traditional radiant cut?  When you look at the faceting of a traditional radiant cut, you'll notice a more uniform sparkle across the entire stone. It’s got that consistent brilliance that just lights up the room.

On the other hand, we’ve got the crushed ice radiant cut. Imagine looking at a bag of crushed ice versus big, solid ice cubes—completely different sparkle, right? The crushed ice radiant has more pinpoint, fiery flashes, creating a dazzling, almost chaotic sparkle.

So now you're probably asking, "Bonnie, which one is better?" And the answer? It’s all about personal preference! I know, I know, you hate when I say that, but seriously—it comes down to what makes your heart skip a beat!

Avoid In-Between Characteristics In Radiant Cut Diamonds

This brings me to my second point—what to avoid when choosing a radiant cut diamond. Now that you know the difference between traditional and crushed ice radiants, let’s talk about what we in the trade like to call "No Man’s Land."

You’re probably thinking, "Bonnie, what does that even mean?" Well, it’s when a radiant cut lands somewhere awkwardly between square and elongated—not quite one or the other. If you want a square radiant, go for a true square. If you’re drawn to the elongated style, commit to that. But avoid anything stuck in that in-between zone—trust me, it just looks… off!

So, when shopping for a radiant cut diamond, steer clear of the "No Man’s Land" look. You want your diamond to make a statement, not leave you wondering what it’s supposed to be!

Avoid Bow-Tie Effect On Diamonds!

Another thing to watch out for when buying a radiant cut is that dreaded dark bow tie effect in the center. Now, let’s be real—all elongated shapes have a bow tie. I’ve said it in just about every blog and I’ll say it again: if you can’t handle a bow tie, buy a round diamond! I know it sounds a little harsh, but I’m here to give you the real deal, and that’s the truth.

So, when you’re choosing your radiant cut, make sure that bow tie isn’t too dark or distracting. A little bow tie is normal, but you don’t want it stealing the spotlight from your gorgeous diamond!

Radiant Cut Diamond Vs An Emerald Cut Diamond

What I absolutely love about radiant cuts—and I think many of you will, too—is that bold, elongated rectangular shape. But unlike an emerald cut, which has that "Hall of Mirrors" effect with larger flashes of light, a radiant cut gives you all the glitter and sparkle! So, if you’re looking for something bold and blingy, the radiant is definitely the way to go.

Now, here’s the third thing to avoid when buying a radiant cut: a diamond that's bottom-heavy or has an extremely thick girdle. What happens with these stones is that all the weight gets stuck at the bottom, and you miss out on that beautiful surface sparkle.

What you want is what we call in the trade a “spready” diamond—meaning the stone looks larger for its carat weight because the weight is distributed across the top.

But don’t go too shallow either! You don’t want the diamond to lose sparkle by leaking light. It’s all about finding that sweet spot where the diamond is spready and sparkly without compromising on beauty.

Purchase Diamonds With The Help Of An Expert

By this point, you might be thinking, "Oh my God, I’m so overwhelmed! How am I supposed to click through all these options online and find the perfect stone?" Well, here’s the deal: talk to your jeweler! Speak with someone who’s an expert in diamonds. Don’t be like, “Oh yeah, I’m an expert because I read a Google article.” No, no, no! Just like you wouldn’t try to fix your own pipes at home—you call a plumber, right? You don’t want sewage flying everywhere! So, leave the diamond picking to the pros.

Now, moving on to the next crucial point: what setting should you choose for a radiant cut? Let’s make sure that gorgeous stone looks absolutely perfect on your hand!

Different Types Of Settings For A Radiant Cut Diamond

Number one: A solitaire! Yes, let’s start with the classic solitaire. What is it, you ask? It’s where your stunning radiant cut sits all by itself on a simple, plain band—no extra diamonds, just that gorgeous stone shining front and center. I love solitaires because they let the diamond truly pop and steal the show.

Now, there are different types of solitaire settings, but today let’s talk about the traditional basket solitaire. It’s a timeless beauty, but here’s a super important tip from yours truly: If you’re going with an elongated shape, don’t forget the gallery wire!

That little wire holds your diamond in place, especially if a prong gets bumped or loosened. Without it, your stone could turn or even—gasp—fly out. Trust me, you do not want that to happen. So, when designing your ring, make sure that wire is in place to keep everything secure!

Radiant Cut Diamond On A Tulip Setting

Our second fan-favorite for solitaires? The tulip radiant cut solitaire—and oh, do we love this one!

It’s not just a favorite, it’s one of my absolute favorites for radiant cuts lately. We also offer it with a cathedral setting and a diamond bridge for that extra sparkle. The tulip design is so elegant, giving you a soft, graceful shape while still showing off that bold, radiant cut. It’s the perfect balance of sophistication and sparkle!

Radiant Cut Diamond On A French Pave with Hidden Halo Setting

Another fan favorite? The French pavé with a hidden halo—oh my God, I love this ring! If you’re all about that bold, all-over sparkle, this style is definitely for you. The little diamonds along the band just add that extra layer of glamour, while the hidden halo gives it that secret, stunning glow from underneath.

Just a quick note: with French pavé, those tiny side diamonds require a bit more care, but trust me, it’s so worth it. And the best part? This design looks fabulous in any metal—platinum, white gold, two-tone, yellow gold, rose gold—you name it, it’ll look gorgeous!

Last but certainly not least— the radiant on radiant! Oh yes, you remember that stunning ring from one of my clients, right? It was just gorgeous with all those radiant cuts, plus a hidden halo under that large, center radiant diamond. Talk about a showstopper!

If you’re looking for a true boss ring—one that says “I’m a lady boss”—this is the ring for you. Seriously, comment “yes” right now if you’re a lady boss, because I want to see that radiant on radiant sparkle on your finger! It’s bold, beautiful, and one of my all-time faves. Total power piece!

Compare Radiant Cut Diamonds With Elongated Stones

Before we dive into those stunning wedding band pairings, let’s quickly chat about a little dilemma you might be having. If you’re sitting there thinking, "Bonnie, I’m not 100% sure if I want a radiant cut anymore," don’t worry! There are other shapes worth considering, like oval, cushion, and emerald cuts.

So, why these options? Well, they all can have that elongated, elegant look you might be after. Oval and cushion cuts offer softer corners, giving you a more gentle, rounded vibe. Meanwhile, emerald and radiant cuts have a more bold, rectangular shape with those signature cut corners.

It all comes down to how you want the ring to complement your hand. Do you prefer something softer and more delicate, or are you drawn to that bold, geometric shape? Take a good look at your hand and see which style speaks to you!

Emerald Cut Diamond vs Radiant Cut Diamond

The main difference between an emerald cut and a radiant cut? It’s all about the faceting and the sparkle! For emerald cuts, you’ve got those sleek, step-cut facets that give off a subtle, refined sparkle. It’s definitely a celebrity favorite—there’s a reason it’s called the King of Diamonds! But if you’re craving that extra fire, the radiant cut has triangular facets that create a much bolder, glittery sparkle.

Now, when comparing oval and cushion cuts, keep in mind that they handle carat weight a bit differently. Cushion cuts tend to hold more weight on the bottom, while oval cuts appear larger on the finger. So, be sure to check the measurements and the length-to-width ratio when comparing these shapes. That way, you can find the perfect match for your style and finger!

Wedding Band Pairings

Okay, let’s move on to everyone’s favorite part—wedding band pairing! Because honestly, what’s a stunning engagement ring without the perfect wedding band to match? It’s like peanut butter without jelly, right? The right band can elevate your entire look, adding that extra sparkle and harmony to your radiant (or any) cut engagement ring.

Whether you're going for a classic solitaire or something a little more intricate, I’m going to show you all the gorgeous ways to make your engagement ring pop with the perfect band pairing. Let’s dive in!

Petite Radiant Cut Diamond Eternity Band
Let’s kick things off with wedding band number one—our Petite Radiant Cut!

You’re looking at about a 3-carat center stone here, and we paired it with a band featuring petite radiant cut diamonds, each about 10 points. Quick tip: 100 points equals 1 carat, so these little beauties are just the right size.

This combo is a dream for those who love radiant-on-radiant sparkle (which, you know I’m a little OCD about too). The balance is just perfect, and it really brings that cohesive, dazzling look to life. I’m totally obsessed with this one!

French Pave Diamond Eternity Band

Next up, wedding band number two—the French Pave band! This one’s all about that perfect contrast.

The engagement ring here is 2mm in width, while the band is slightly thicker at 2.7mm. And let me tell you, that difference gives it just the right amount of contrast and balance.

Even if you’re rocking just the band without the engagement ring, it still holds its own. It’s substantial enough to stand alone, but when paired with the ring, it creates a gorgeous, complementary look. I love the way this combo adds dimension without being overwhelming!

East West Petite Radiant Cut Diamond Eternity Band

Next, we’ve got the East-West Radiant paired with a petite band, and oh my goodness, this one is special! I just finished it, and it’s already a favorite. It’s got that chunky feel without overpowering the center stone—radiant on radiant at its finest!

The band complements the diamond so beautifully, and it’s unique enough to stand out while still being totally stackable. You can easily pair this with another band for that layered look. It’s the kind of combo that makes you stop and say, wow! Perfect balance of bold and elegant.

Victoria Round Cut Diamond Band

Lastly, we have our Victoria Round Diamond Band.

Compared to the French Pave, this one’s a bit chunkier, with thicker diamonds that give it a bolder look. If you're looking for something a little more substantial, this is a fantastic choice. It’s seamless, smooth, and—just like the others—it doesn’t steal the spotlight from your radiant cut center stone. You can totally wear it on its own too, thanks to its low-profile design. Plus, it’s available in multiple metal colors, so you’ve got options to match your style.

So, which one has your heart? Are you fully convinced the radiant cut is your perfect match? Let me know! Thanks for reading, and stay tuned for more diamond magic!
