emerald ring, radiant ring

Welcome back, diamond lovers, to another By Bonnie blog! Today, I’m bringing you a fan-favorite topic—shape comparison and wedding band pairings! Whether you’re shopping for diamonds online, working with a private jeweler, or even shopping with me, my goal is to help you figure out the perfect shape for you and all those lovely details.

A little while back, I actually went undercover as a consumer and bought a diamond online just to understand the experience better and make more helpful videos and blogs for you all. So, let’s dive right into this week's hot topic: Radiant Cut vs. Emerald Cut. I know how much you all love radiants, so I’ll break down both shapes, how to choose the right one, their perfect ratios, and of course, the best wedding bands to pair with each. Ready? Let’s go!

Radiant Cut VS Emerald Cut

Alright, let’s dive in! Here we have a stunning 2-carat radiant cut versus a 2-carat emerald cut. Now, before you get swept away by the sparkle, the first question I want you to ask yourself when you’re shopping for these gorgeous elongated shapes is: What is the ratio?

Ask About Your Diamond’s Ratio

The ratio determines whether your diamond will have that more square, balanced look or a longer, more elegant shape. So, is ratio important? Ratio is everything—it comes before color and clarity. Why? Because it literally dictates the size and appearance of your diamond on the finger.

The right ratio can make a 2-carat diamond look bigger or more balanced, depending on the look you’re going for. I actually made a whole video comparing oval ratios too! If you’re curious and want me to do a specific ratio comparison for each diamond shape, slide into my DMs and let me know!

Now, I know what you’re thinking: "Radiant and emerald cuts—don’t they look so similar?" Well, not so fast! There are some key differences, and we’re about to break them down! Let’s go!

Differences Between an Emerald and a Radiant Cut

While both radiant and emerald cuts have those signature cut corners and a rectangular shape, the real difference lies in how they sparkle.

Radiant CutRadiant Cut

The radiant cut gives you that traditional, brilliant sparkle—those tiny, twinkling flashes all across the stone, similar to what you’d see in a round cut. It’s super fiery and eye-catching!

On the other hand, the emerald cut has a totally different vibe. It features those large, straight facets, creating a mirror-like effect, often referred to as a "hall of mirrors" look. This gives off broader, more dramatic flashes of light rather than a continuous shimmer.

So, when you hear someone say, "I want a rectangular diamond," don’t just grab the first one you see! It’s all about understanding the bride and what kind of sparkle she envisions. Does she want a stone that twinkles all over or one with those bold, elegant flashes? The sparkle says it all!

Radiant Cut Tulip Basket Solitaire Engagement Ring

For the radiant cut, our first pairing is the signature tulip basket, a fan favorite!

This setting has a gorgeous floral design that gives the ring an elegant, romantic feel, especially with the cathedral, which really enhances the center stone. It’s a beautiful balance between classic and intricate.

Now, you might be wondering, Can I get the tulip design with an emerald cut diamond? Well, here’s why we typically don’t. With an emerald cut’s step-cut facets, any intricate design, like the tulip or floral details, would show through the stone's pavilion facet.

This can create distracting outlines behind the diamond, which isn't ideal for such a clean, sharp cut. That’s why we prefer a more minimalistic setting for emerald cuts, to let that bold, mirror-like sparkle really shine through without any interference. It’s all about craftsmanship and making sure the stone looks its absolute best!

Wedding Band Pairings

Now that we’ve talked about the radiant and emerald cuts, let’s move on to one of the most exciting parts—wedding band pairings! Choosing the right band can completely transform the look of your ring, enhancing its beauty or adding that extra sparkle. Whether you want something delicate or bold, we’ve got options to suit every style. Let’s dive into some of our favorite pairings for these stunning shapes!

Victoria Round Band

I paired the radiant cut with our Victoria Round Band, and let me tell you, the sparkle on sparkle is just gorgeous! The elegant simplicity of the emerald cut combined with the extra shine from the Victoria band creates such a sophisticated look. It’s the perfect balance of classic and eye-catching without overpowering the stone. A true match made in heaven!

Emerald Wedding Band

The first pairing I did for the Emerald is just Emerald on Emerald, because if you're in love with that clean, sleek look of an emerald cut, this pairing is for you! The large facets on the ring and the band complement each other beautifully, giving it that minimalistic yet luxurious feel. If you appreciate the elegance of straight lines and that gorgeous mirror-like sparkle, this is definitely one of my favorite pairings for both rings! All right, let’s keep going!

Round Diamond French Pavé Band

The second pairing I have is the emerald cut with a round pavé diamond band. If you’re looking for a bit of contrast, this combo is perfect! The clean, straight lines of the emerald cut paired with the delicate sparkle of the round pavé diamonds create a beautiful balance. When worn separately, you’ll really notice the difference in styles, which adds a unique touch to your set. It’s definitely a favorite among our clients!

East West Emerald Band

To keep things more minimalistic, I paired the radiant cut with our EastWest emerald cut band. This gives you the clean, rectangular shape you love, but with a horizontal twist, making it a bit daintier and more unique. It adds a modern touch while keeping the look sleek and elegant. Depending on your style, this pairing is perfect if you want something distinct yet subtle, and it looks absolutely stunning together!

Now that we've explored the solitaire comparison, let's dive into the beauty of pavé diamonds on the side! One of our most popular designs for the radiant cut is the French pavé with a hidden halo, and it pairs beautifully with the emerald cut as well.

Here’s a little tip: if you're considering a larger stone—say, 4 or 5 carats or more—you might want to think about a lower-profile ring. This design not only enhances the elegance of the center stone but also minimizes its height. If you lead an active lifestyle or find yourself constantly using your hands, a lower profile can reduce the risk of accidentally knocking your ring. It’s a smart choice for both style and practicality!
